In April we had an exclusive visit to the Dolder Grand. For the ones who do not know the Dolder Grand yet:

This landmark hillside hotel is a 5-star superior hotel in Zürich, built in 1899 and renovated in 2008 for 385 million Swiss francs. Nowadays, it is undoubtedly one of the best 5***** Hotels in Switzerland.

The chateau-style hotel has hosted Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, the Rolling Stones and Rihanna (and of course many more). As for Rihanna, who snapped a famous half-naked Instagram photo of herself in the Maestro Suite, please scroll down to “maestro suite” part – we gave it a try 🙂

The hotel is located high above Zurich, with a sweeping forest and a golf course as well as an ice rink during winter. Not only does it offer spectacular panoramic views of Zurich and the lake, but also the beautiful Swiss Alps.

But what most people do not know before staying at this place, is the Dolder Grand hotel’s impressively rich and comprehensive art collection. When waiting at the front desk, you are welcomed by a 33-foot Andy Warhol Big Retrospective Painting. When you’re walking down the grand stairs, to drink one of the 1200 bottles of wine in “The Restaurant” (which has by the way been awarded 18 GaultMillau points and 2 Michelin stars), you see the beautiful neo-impressionist painting by Sylvester Stallone. All scattered across the hotel, you’ll see master artwork pieces from Ferdinand Botero, Duane Hanson, Henry Moore, Takashi Murakami, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely and many many more. If you don’t want to study the stunning art collection yourself, luckily the Dolder provides you with a self-guided iPad tour.

Further below in this post, we’ll provide a few images from the art pieces we have taken.

The Maestro Suite

So, it’s always good to start with the best: The Maestro Suite at the Dolder Grand.

The suite was inspired by the maestro himself, Herbert von Karajan, conductor. So classical music meets classical architecture. The suite is located at the highest point, in the chateau tower of the Dolder Grand. The 2-floor suite offers more than 400m² of living space. Yep, this is probably the most luxurious suite we have EVER been to. Let’s look at the list of things you’ll find here:

  • Steinway Grand Piano
  • luxurious marble bathrooms
  • whirlpool & steam shower
  • sauna
  • library
  • massive dining room in the circular tower
  • living room in the main tower
  • lounge
  • bar
  • fireplace
  • terrace
  • private roof-top terrace

The $15000-per-night maestro suite only recently became available again after a two-year occupation – so if you are planning to stay there permanently, give it a try 🙂

Earlier, we mentioned Rihanna, who snapped a famous half-naked Instagram photo of herself in the Maestro Suite.

Well – we thought we can do the same (with clothes), what do you think? 🙂 🙂

Restaurants at the Dolder

There are two restaurants at the Dolder: “The Restaurant”, lead by Fine Dining chef Heiko Nieder who has two Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points. There are hundreds of top wines to chose from.

Then there is a more casual restaurant, the so-called “Saltz” which is pretty much a piece of art in itself.  The designer aimed to design the location to mimic the Swiss landscape: red wall to show the Alpine silhouette, red climbing ropes and carabiners and then the sitting booths are also completely in red (with 5.- Swiss coins on it).

We have to admit, that we did not have the chance to dine in one of these restaurants – but it’s definitely on our list. And what even interests more is their Sunday brunch. As you guys know already, were are totally in love with Sunday brunches and we have tested so many already. Especially in Zurich, the brunch scene is quite competitive, but apparently there is no place that quite matches the Dolder Grand. So it’s definitely on top of our brunch-to-do-list – we’ll provide you soon with a review 🙂

But for now, let’s have a look at the Dolders restaurants:
